Bosomtwe Rural Bank PLC

Origin of Bosomtwe Rural Bank Limited

History of BRB

Bosomtwe Rural Bank Limited was established in response to an urgent need voiced by farmers in Kuntanase and surrounding towns and villages. At the time, these farmers had to walk over 48 kilometers—mostly on foot—to cash their Akuafo cheques at the nearest bank, which was the Ghana Commercial Bank in Bekwai.

It is said that Mr. Ben Appiah Manu, a native of Kuntanase and former employee of the Bank of Ghana, suggested to the Kuntanase Traditional Authorities the idea of establishing a rural bank. This came at a time in the early 1980s when the Government and the Bank of Ghana were expanding rural banking following a successful pilot program in the late 1970s.

With his expertise, Mr. Appiah Manu supported the traditional leaders through the required processes at the Bank of Ghana, leading to the eventual establishment of Bosomtwe Rural Bank Limited.

The Founding and Inauguration of Bosomtwe Rural Bank

Origin of Bosomtwe Rural Bank Limited

When the Kuntanase Traditional Authority embraced the idea to set up a Rural Bank, a publication was made to the inhabitants in the Kuntanase and its surrounding towns and villages. As a result, a series of town meetings were held to solicit support in raising the minimum capital of Six Hundred and Fifty Thousand as required by the Central Bank at the time. This preparatory work started in the year 1981.

To avoid individual dominance in the ownership of Rural Banks, it was part of the Central Bank policy that an individual could not own shares in a particular Rural bank worth more than One Hundred Cedis, equivalent to one pesewa today. This policy poses difficulty to the promoters in raising the minimum capital since more subscribers to the shares are required. In their undying quest to raise the capital, the Kuntanase community, led by their chief Nana Adu Gyamfi Poku II, devised a strategy in the form of outreach to attract more subscribers. A social group in Kuntanase called Kuntanase Development Association (KUNDA) commenced the outreach work in Accra, and their efforts targeted natives of Kuntanase living in Accra. It is on the record that the underlisted individuals were appointed to sell out shares to subscribers at various towns/villages
